Important updates: School-based Immunization Program
Public health nurses will be visiting each school once during the school year to offer the vaccines listed below to Grade 7 students, and to provide additional doses to Grade 8 students who have not completed their vaccine series.
Eligible students who have a consent form signed by a parent or legal guardian will be offered , and vaccines.
If your child has already received these vaccines from their primary healthcare provider, please review and update yourÌý
Students can receive missed or additional doses of vaccines through their primary care provider, at a public health community immunization clinic, or at a school clinic when the student is in Grade 8.
Halton Region Public Health holds community immunization clinics during the summer and at various times throughout the school year to help students catch up on missed or additional doses of routine vaccines.

The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care provides a school-based immunization program for Grade 7 students that is delivered by the local health departments.
The immunization program currently delivered in schools provides vaccination for:
- Hepatitis B
- Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
- Meningococcal Disease

Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis B virus. The Hepatitis B vaccine is given in a series of two to four immunizations, depending on the person’s age and the reason the vaccine is being given.

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a very common virus with more than 100 types. Currently, the vaccine is available free of charge to grade 7 students in Ontario schools.
Participation in the HPV vaccination program is voluntary. The HPV vaccination will only be administered to students whose parents have provided a signed consent form, granting permission for their child(ren) to receive the vaccine.​â¶Ä‹â€‹â¶Ä‹â€‹â¶Ä‹â€‹â¶Ä‹â€‹â¶Ä‹â€‹â¶Ä‹â€‹

Meningococcal Disease
Meningococcal disease is caused by bacteria known as Neisseria meningitidis (commonly known as meningococcus). Meningococcal disease is a very serious infection.
Parents are required to provide proof of their child’s immunization against this disease for school attendance, unless a valid statement of exemption is provided.
