Achieving

Meeting the needs of all learners

At HCDSB, we value excellence in learning and are committed to providing exceptional education by meeting the learning needs of all learners so that they may realize their full God-given potential.

We will prepare all students to be ready for success in their chosen pathway 鈥 apprenticeship, college, university, community living or the workplace.

We know that for today鈥檚 students, success in their future requires a different set of skills and knowledge than what was needed in the past.

As we pursue the goal of success for students, our understanding of student achievement must include not only the acquisition of literacy and numeracy skills, but also the development of so much more. Critical thinking skills, independent inquiry skills, superior communication skills, and a highly developed capacity for collaborative work is important if our students are going to be sufficiently adaptable and flexible to adjust to new technologies, emerging opportunities, and challenges yet unknown.

Our Goals Under the Priority of Achieving:

  1. Educational experiences and opportunities are differentiated to support all learners.
  2. Teachers and learners are collaborating in innovative school and classroom communities that encourage student engagement, learning and achievement.
  3. We hold high expectations for all learners.

The annual Strategic Plan Monitoring Survey found that:

67%

of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that HCDSB offers educational experiences and opportunities to support all learners.

72%

of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that at HCDSB schools teachers and learners collaborate in ways that promote student engagement, learning, and achievement.

58%

of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that HCDSB holds high expectations for all learners.

Student Excellence at HCDSB

Each year, the 嫩芽视频 (HCDSB) celebrates exceptional students across our school district at the Annual Student Awards of Excellence Ceremony.

In the 2023-2024 school year we recognized and celebrated students at our 36th Annual Student Awards of Excellence Ceremony on Monday, April 22, 2024.

The ceremony took place at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School in Oakville. His Excellency, Most Reverend Douglas Crosby, OMI, Bishop of Hamilton offered prayers and blessings; and musical entertainment was provided by the Our Lady of Peace Catholic Elementary School Choir, under the direction of Linda Chong, accompanied by Steve Curto.

The Student Awards of Excellence are presented annually to a student from each elementary and secondary school who has demonstrated outstanding qualities in Catholic leadership, family commitment, involvement in school affairs and community activities.

The Spirit of Inclusion Award was created by the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC), and is presented each year to one elementary student and one secondary student who has demonstrated a commitment to school activities and to their community, making their peers feel valued and respected.

For the first time this year, the Award of Excellence for Multilingual Students was presented to two (2) newcomer students from an elementary and a secondary school. This award recognizes the perseverance and efforts of newcomer students through their transition to a new environment and learning a new language.

Phenomenal Work from the 2023-2024 Top IB Graduating Student!

St. Thomas Aquinas Logo with IB logo

Graduating students of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme are outstanding examples of inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people.

Elena Vala, a graduating student of the IB Programme for the 2023-2024 school year scored an impressive 44 out of 45 possible points in her studies! Elena scored 7 out of 7 in Business Management HL, Biology HL, Chemistry SL, Math SL, and French B SL. Her hard work and dedication have truly paid off.

Being a student in St. Thomas Aquinas鈥 International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme was a challenging endeavour, but a rewarding one! It provided me with many opportunities to set personal goals and pursue my interests in biology and French in depth, with teachers who supported and encouraged me. Studying in small groups with like-minded peers allowed us to build a fun and supportive community. The programme prepared me well for university, the rigorous academic level helped me get placed in advanced classes for my chosen fields of study, while the Extended Essay and the Internal Assessments have taught me valuable research and workload-management skills.

– Elena Vala, Student at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School

Elena began her studies at Hillsdale College in Michigan to study for a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in French.

Unveiling of Project REV: The Electric Vehicle at Bishop Reding School!

On June 4, 2024, students and staff from gathered for the grand unveiling of the Reding Electric Vehicle (REV). The innovative project, a near-scale replica of Henry Ford鈥檚 1896 prototype Quadricycle, combined a fusion of antique aesthetics and modern technology.

The REV was modelled after the original Quadricycle鈥檚 vintage charm, and was a year-long endeavour that brought together multiple departments within the school. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) students collaborated on this project, tackling numerous design challenges under the guidance of their dedicated teachers.

Students from various programs, including Advanced Placement (AP), the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), and Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM), also contributed their time and skills towards the REV. Their contributions involved problem-solving, design, and construction, while demonstrating the practical applications of classroom learning.

While the REV retains the Quadricycle鈥檚 iconic ladder-frame design, stick steering lever, and single couch seat, students introduced several modern twists. Instead of a gasoline engine, the vehicle is powered by a brushless electric motor. The team also designed and built a solar charging station, allowing the REV to charge its batteries sustainably, without cost or environmental impact. Additionally, engineering students developed a radar-based collision detection system that automatically slows the vehicle to prevent accidents.

“When designing and building the REV, being a part of the experience was engaging and exciting, while also being educational and built problem solving skills,” said Olivia Lukito, Grade 11 SHSM Transportation student. “We encountered many different obstacles that required re-designing and re-planning, which taught us patience and collaboration, which led us to the completion of the final REV. From this experience we gained life skills, along with the knowledge of design and building, which can be applied in all subjects.”

“To make something extraordinary like the REV, it requires consistent effort, dedication, and teamwork to make it all come together,” said Muhanned Al-Yafi, Grade 12 Transportation student. “I learned that with the many components that came to create the REV, we needed the contributions of many different students within the STEM programs to gather and finish the project.”

The REV will continue to inspire future generations at Bishop Reding Catholic Secondary School, showcasing the power of hands-on learning and the remarkable achievements that can result from teamwork and dedication.
