February is Black History Month, and while the month provides an opportunity for intentional focus, our commitment to centering Black excellence extends beyond just one month. Our efforts to dismantle anti-Black racism in our classrooms, schools, and community are ongoing.聽We know that Black History is Canadian History and should be celebrated and taught throughout the year. This year, we have named a theme for Black History month 鈥撀African Systems of Knowledge. African systems of knowledge is an area of study that focuses on ancient knowledge systems on the African continent. To that end, we have shared links to resources and guest speakers with all schools across district to highlight the contributions and achievements of Black Canadians.聽聽

We are also excited to hold our first Board-wide Black Excellence Symposium for Students on February 8, 2024. The symposium will consist of a keynote presentation and a variety of workshops on topics for inspiring, motivating and celebrating students in the Black Student Unions across each of our secondary schools.

At HCDSB, Human Rights and Equity are not just ideals but guiding principles, deeply rooted in Catholic Social Teaching and aligned with the Ontario Human Rights Code. These principles are further supported by the Ministry of Education’s framework for Equity and Inclusive Education in Ontario schools.

Last year we undertook an Equity Audit, conducted by an external service provider, and the final report and results of the Equity Audit were presented to the Board of Trustees at the December 5th Board Meeting. The same external service provider provided an Anti-Black Racism Strategy Report, which was also shared at the December 5th Board Meeting. Both reports highlight systemic barriers within our school board, including anti-Black racism, and outline a series of recommendations to begin addressing systemic inequities. Over the next few months, we will work in partnership with community stakeholders to explore sustainable solutions and strategies within the framework of the recommendations to advance meaningful and impactful outcomes.鈥

While we recognize the progress we have made as a system, we know there is still significant work ahead. We are unwavering in our commitment to implement changes to create a more equitable and inclusive school system 鈥 where every student and staff member is valued.鈥

Working together, we will create safe, inclusive, and welcoming environments for every member of the HCDSB community, continually striving towards equity and justice for all.聽

In February and throughout the year, our school board honours the legacy of Black Canadians and Canadians of African descent 鈥 past and present. 聽
