On Wednesday, May 31st, 2023, HCDSB celebrated volunteer parents, instructors, and “Tiny Teachers” from twenty-one Roots of Empathy programs at our year-end Baby Celebration at
The is offered to HCDSB Kindergarten to Grade 8 classrooms with the support of trained instructors, including Child and Youth Counsellors (CYCs) and Designated Early Childhood Educators (DECEs). The program’s goal is to increase empathy – the ability to understand how another person feels.

At the celebration, students, parents, and instructors shared meaningful reflections on how the power of connection helped to strengthen empathy and build positive relationships in classrooms this year.
Thank you to our dedicated DECE and CYC instructors and their schools for their commitment to the Roots of Empathy program this year. And thank you to Mr. Dunn and Ms. Copeland’s Grade 4 students for providing musical entertainment at the celebration!
