is pleased to be offering a variety of Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Programs to secondary students in the Town of Milton next year!
SHSM is a Ministry of Education approved specialized program that allows students to gain credits towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and focus their learning on a specific economic sector.
Students in the SHSM program are able to:
- Customize their secondary school education to suit their interests and talents;
- Gain important hands-on skills on the job while they complete cooperative education (co-op) placements;
- Earn industry-specific certifications and qualifications;
- Identify, explore and refine career goals, and make informed decisions about their future;
- Transition easily after graduation to apprenticeship training, college, university or the workplace.
New offerings next school year!
- The Arts & Culture SHSM program (pending final approval from the Ministry of Education) will offer St. Francis Xavier students experiential learning, training courses and co-op placements in performing arts (music, drama and visual arts). The program is focused on building a foundation for students hoping to pursue a career in the arts-based sector.
- The Chef/Baker Hospitality (Concentrated OYAP) 鈥� Will be taught by a Red Seal Chef and Ontario Certified Teacher. This program offers students the ability to transition from secondary school to a post-secondary Cook, Chef or Baker Apprenticeship.
St. Francis Xavier Catholic Secondary School currently offers the following SHSM Programs to students:
- Business 鈥� Students can specialize, gain qualifications, and plan their future in the business sector, focusing on a career pathway such as accounting, finance, marketing, sales and marketing.
- First Responder & Emergency Services 鈥� Offers experience and qualifications in the public safety and security sector, which would cover occupations such as: Air Traffic Controller, Criminologist, Firefighter, Police Officer, Paramedic, and Corrections Officer.
- Information & Communications Technology 鈥� Students can gain the knowledge and specialization in essential and high demand fields such as software or computer engineering, software design, graphic design, or cybersecurity.
- Sports 鈥� Providing students with the knowledge, hands-on experience and skills in fitness, training and sports leadership.
