Alyssa Briggs, a alumna and former student of the Transportation Program has continued to excel in her chosen field after graduating secondary school!
Before Alyssa graduated from Bishop Reding Catholic Secondary School, she took courses in the SHSM program, specifically Transportation (Automotive Technology) to gain the knowledge, expertise and hands-on learning experience required before leading to her chosen post-secondary destination.
The SHSM Program is a Ministry of Education approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector, while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) to graduate from secondary school.
“I chose transportation because it was the closest I could get to aviation when I decided I wanted aviation,” said Alyssa. “I think it set me up for success very well and that I already had all of the mechanical skills that I needed from high school to transfer to my current occupation.”
Alyssa is currently working as an aircraft maintenance technician at Voyageur Aviation Corp in North Bay, Ontario and is thriving in her field.
“My favourite parts of the program were definitely all the different courses that I got to do…The SHSM Transportation Program came into play with a lot of different job offers that I got, in fact I got asked about doing the SHSM Program multiple times in multiple different interviews so I think it definitely played a factor in whether or not I got the job.”
