During the 2021-2022 school year,  Social Justice and Equity classes (HSE4M) partnered with the charity organization Alpha Education, funded by TD Bank, to collaborate on the “Shadows of Racism, Voices Unheard” project.鈥

The “Shadows of Racism, Voices Unheard” project aims to engage communities, education, and the creative arts. Students used the language of visual arts as a form of expression and activism to reflect on the causes and consequences of discrimination.  
 
Over the semester, students participated in educational workshops, learning skills and tools to deepen their understanding of the rich possibilities within diversity intrinsic to Canadian identity. Students were asked to create engaging and creative videos to call attention to social issues within their community.鈥 
 
Noah Bell, Isabella Colmenares, Katie Couto and Ronald Marino won the first-place prize of $200 for their project entitled “Hispanic Representation: A Catalyst for Change.” Each participant received $50. Runners-up and honourable mentions go to the following projects and group members along with a $25 prize for each student: “The Absence of Teaching Indigenous History” by Andraya Juresic, Lauren Morewood, Katrina Kinney and Olivia Carson; “Healthcare’s Darkest Secret” by Owen Belford, Victoria Collis, Mae Desembrana, and Brianna Campell; “Eurocentric Beauty Standard” by Faith De Barros, Hadassah Gindhi, Raichel Santos, and Micheal Sadecki; and “Stories Told” by Maya Pappas, Haya Irfan, Luciana Ragone, and Easton Kirpatrick.鈥
