Tobi Oyedele from was one of two first-place winners for the Halton Black History Awareness Society’s (HBHAS) “Local Lens: The Black Experience in Halton” essay contest!
The is a passionate multi-cultural group dedicated to implementing cultural education in society. The HBHAS supports its local community in understanding and appreciating the values of inclusivity, equality, and self-development while dismantling acts of bullying, prejudice, and inequality on all levels.
In February 2022, HBHAS invited secondary student contestants to submit an essay about current Black History in Halton. Tobi’s eight-page writing piece reflected on tales of bravery and battles throughout Black History in Halton. This well-written essay resulted in Tobi’s first-place win and a $500 cash prize!
This contest allowed participants and members of the community to further understand the achievements and contributions of Black Canadians in Halton. The essay’s requirements included a minimum of 3 pages, a complete bibliography, and a student reflection on what they’ve learned from personal experiences. Three judges assessed on the following criteria: research, comprehensiveness, relevance, presentation, and originality. The winning contestants received awards and cash prizes of $500 for first place winners, $250 for second place, and $100 for third place.
