Adelyn McDonald, a grade two student at in Milton, had the opportunity for her written book ‘The Secret Beneath the Sand’ to be in the school library!

This June 2022, Ms. McKay’s grade two class was assigned a writing task of a comic book or one-page entry in their journal. Adleyn had so much to write that she asked if she could write a whole chapter book! She worked on the book in her spare time at both school and at home.

Ms. McKay recognized Adelyn’s excellent writing skills. She was able to arrange for her to read her book to Vice Principal, Mrs. Robinson and Librarian, Mrs. Ford, who then told Adelyn they’d put it in the school library! With help from her mom, Adelyn typed up, printed, and made a cover of her story to be available for other kids to read!

Ms. McKay encouraged Adelyn to read a few chapters to the class, hoping to inspire other students to explore their creative writing skills. Her classmates loved the story!  One student even gave Adelyn extra pages from their notebook, so she could continue writing her story! Some children also requested to read Adelyn’s book during their silent reading time in class!

Adelyn was inspired to start writing after reading some of her mom’s written stories from when she was little. She started this particular novel from one of her mother’s old titles and even based the main character on her own personality. “I started writing short stories in my journal in kindergarten,” said Adelyn. “But this is my very first chapter book! I want to write a sequel to The Secret Beneath the Sand this summer, and I’m also already starting to plan a whole new book series.”

Congratulations to an up-and-coming creative young author, Adelyn! Her book is available for students to loan in Queen of Heaven’s library. Read The Secret Beneath the Sand here!
