Rylan Van Der Spuy, a Grade 5 Student from in Oakville, is the national winner of the Habitat for Humanity Meaning of Home contest!
With a total of 13,000 student entries submitted nationally, Rylan’s poem entry was awarded as the grand prize winner, which offered a $30,000 donation to the Halton-Mississauga-Dufferin chapter!
In February, students in grades 4,5 and 6 across Canada were invited to participate in the Meaning of Home contest. Participants were asked to submit a written poem, reflection, essay or story explaining what home means to them. Rylan creatively developed a poem about the meaning of home to support housing initiatives through Habitat for Humanity.
Each entry was guaranteed a $10 donation to Habitat for Humanity, an organization that works with volunteers to help build safe and affordable homes for families in our community. The contest winners were given a chance to donate directly to a local Habitat for Humanity build of their choice.

On June 29, Rylan was recognized for his accomplishment at a school-wide assembly. Representatives from Habitat for Humanity presented him with a cheque presentation for his efforts. He read his poem to fellow students, which has now been turned into an illustrative picture book!
Congratulations to Rylan for your big win!
