November is Indigenous Awareness Month at the 嫩芽视频 (HCDSB). Throughout the month of November and during this school year, students and staff will acknowledge the contributions and legacy of First Nation, M茅tis and Inuit peoples in Canada.

Days of Importance:

  • Treaties Recognition Week will be celebrated November 2-6, 2020. Resources have been provided to elementary schools to educate students about the importance of treaties and how they have helped to shape the province of Ontario.鈥
  • Inuit Day, November 7, 2020. On this day we recognize the cultures, histories, contemporary contexts and rich contributions of Inuit peoples in our community and across the country.
  • National Aboriginal Veterans Day, November 8, 2020.  This is a memorial day observed in Canada in recognition of Aboriginal contributions to military service, particularly in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War.
  • Louis Riel Day, November 16, 2020. Louis Riel was a great M茅tis leader who helped his people form a government and become part of the newly created Dominion of Canada in 1870. 鈥

Quick Facts

  • 鈥嬧嬧婬CDSB encourages voluntary self-identification of students and families of Indigenous descent. Indigenous Student Self-identification 鈥allows students and families to identify as having First Nation, M茅tis, or Inuit ancestry. The self-identification process is entirely voluntary and confidential. By self-identifying, students and their families will have access to a variety of cultural programming, as well as opportunities for funding and supports for post-secondary programs.

“Indigenous Awareness Month provides an opportunity for students and school communities to learn more about the history, legacy and truth of our First Nation, M茅tis and Inuit peoples in Canada.”
