In the quiet hours of Easter Monday, Pope Francis was called home to our Heavenly Father.
This profound loss comes just as we celebrate the Resurrection of Christ and enter more deeply into the joy and promise of the Easter season. It is especially poignant as we journey through the Jubilee Year of Hope—an invitation from Pope Francis himself to renew our trust in God’s love and to walk forward in faith, even in the midst of sorrow.
Pope Francis led the Church with humility, compassion, and conviction. His voice echoed the call of the Gospel—to care for the poor, protect our common home, welcome the marginalized, and act always with mercy and love. He challenged us to be a Church that journeys to the peripheries and meets people where they are.
His passing is a loss that resonates far beyond the Catholic community, touching the hearts of many around the world who were inspired by his humility, courage, and care for all people.
As a Catholic school community, we give thanks for the life and witness of Pope Francis. His teachings and example will continue to guide and inspire our students, staff, and families for years to come.
While we mourn the passing of Pope Francis, we also accompany one another in prayer and reflection. As a sign of our collective grief, we have lowered the flags at all HCDSB schools and offices to half-mast. Resources have been shared with our schools, and students and staff will be supported in honouring his memory through prayer, classroom discussions, and school-wide opportunities for reflection.
We invite all members of our community to join us in prayer for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis, and for the Church during this time of mourning and transition.
